eBook Architect

Company Description:

Olive Tree Bible Software provides Bible versions and study tools for mobile devices, currently offering products for the iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile, Palm OS and Symbian platforms. The company offers over 600 products for use on these mobile platforms, including over 100 translations of the Bible, along with commentaries, dictionaries, devotionals, and eBooks. In addition, Olive Tree serves an international community with Bible translations offered in German, French, Spanish, Chinese, and more, and is a leader in providing original Hebrew and Greek texts on mobile platforms.

The mobile device marketplace has become increasingly complex, and the number of devices and platforms has increased steadily since the pioneering early days of Palm Pilots. The advent of smartphones capable of running application software, along with the opening of the App Store on iTunes, has created a mass market for third-party mobile device software. The announcement of further application stores to serve other device platforms creates an ever-growing population of mobile device users. In addition, the convergence of mobile, desktop and web devices and applications is bringing new challenges to the mobile device industry as boundaries blur and new and existing technologies are applied more broadly.

Position Description:

Olive Tree is committed to provide fresh, quality Bible products to serve the needs of this expanding, metamorphosing mobile community. Making the latest titles available to mobile users, coupled with Olive Tree’s commitment to provide both depth and breadth in its product offerings, creates an ever-increasing demand for texts formatted to work with the BibleReader program. To that end, Olive Tree is seeking a full-time eBook Architect to assist in automated text conversion and formatting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Convert publisher-provided content from a variety of formats (PageMaker, PDF, Quark, XML, etc.) to OTML (Olive Tree Markup Language).
  • Work with and contribute to a library of reusable scripts, with delineation for author or publisher-specific usage.
  • Quality check converted electronic texts.
  • Suggest improvements for text-handling capabilities or product features.

Skills and Experience Requirements

Technical Skills

The successful applicant will demonstrate familiarity with at least one scripting or markup language such as:

  • Perl
  • Regular Expressions
  • HTML
  • XML

An understanding of religious or Bible materials is not required, but is helpful to accomplish to responsibilities of this position.

Education

Bachelors Degree, or alternatively an Associates Degree coupled with equivalent experience.

Qualifications

  • Interest and desire in working with technology.
  • Willingness to learn and a desire to expand his/her skill set to tackle more complex projects.
  • Self-starter who can move forward on a project with minimal direction, able to roll up his/her sleeves to get the work done.
  • Focused individual which can spend several hours of the workday scripting and debugging.
  • Organized with an ability to handle a complex, multi-location file system accessed by several users.
  • An ability to prioritize among competing demands to meet publisher and company deadlines.
  • A strong communicator who can provide accurate assessments of time needed for accomplishment of text conversion, able to outline constraints to success.
  • High standards with low tolerance for sub-par quality products, yet with an understanding of the trade-off between commercial viability and perfectionism.
  • Flexible, able to jump in to assist in other projects in related technologies as the need arises.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Convert publisher-provided content in a variety of formats (PageMaker, PDF, Quark, XML) to OTML (Olive Tree Markup Language).
  • Quality check converted electronic texts.
  • Suggest improvements for text-handling capabilities or product features.
  • Act as a back-up for our support staff during busy seasons.

Skills and Experience Requirements:

Technical Skills

The successful applicant will demonstrate proficiency in fast, detailed and accurate typing. Also required is a basic knowledge of a markup language such as HTML.

Not required but helpful is an understanding of scripting languages and text processing tools such as Regular Expressions, and/or an exposure to quality assurance processes. A background in proof-reading and editing is also helpful, as is an understanding of religious or biblical materials.

Education

Bachelors or Associates Degree.

  • Self-starter who can move forward on a project with minimal direction, able to roll up his/her sleeves to get the work done.
  • Focused individual who can spend several hours of the workday in concentrated typing of markup text.
  • Organized with an ability to handle a multi-location file system accessed by several users.

  • Detailed and accurate with high standards and a low tolerance for sub-par quality products, yet with an understanding of the trade-off between commercial viability and perfectionism.
  • Desire to expand his/her skills to tackle more complex projects, including regular expressions and scripting.
  • Flexible, able to jump in to assist in other projects as the need arises.
